Centre approves 3% hike in DA/DR for central government employees and pensioners

On 21st October 2021, The Union Cabinet has given its approval to increase 3 percent in Dearness Allowance (DA) and Dearness Relief (DR) for the central government employees and pensioners.

  • After the increase, the DA/DR has increased to 31% from 28 percent of the basic pay/pension and it will be effective from July 1st, 2021.
  • Govt will use the exchequer Rs 9,488.70 crore per annum.

Russian Activist Alexei Navalny won European Union’s Sakharov Prize

Russian Opposition leader Alexei Navalny has been honored with the European Union’s top human rights prize, Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought for 2021. he was nominated for the award along with Afghan women and Bolivian political leader Jeanine Áñez.

  • He is awarded for his immense personal bravery to fight tirelessly against the corruption of Vladimir Putin’s regime.
  • The Sakharov Prize is to be presented during a European Parliament session in Strasbourg which will be held on December 15th, 2021.

RBI imposes Rs 1 crore penalty on Paytm Payments Bank

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has imposed a penalty of Rs. one crore on Paytm Payments Bank due to violating provisions of the Payment and Settlement Systems Act 2007.

  • RBI puts a monetary penalty under Section 26 (2) of the Payment and Settlement Systems Act, 2007 (PSS Act).
  • The central bank found that PPBL had submitted information that did not reflect the factual position.
  • Apart from this, The Reserve Bank has imposed a penalty of ₹27.78 lakh on Western Union Financial Services for non-compliance with certain directions.
  • Western Union Financial Services reported instances of breach of the ceiling of 30 remittances per beneficiary during 2019 and 2020 and filed an application for compounding of the violation.
