India and World Bank sign $250 million projects to make existing dams safe and resilient

The World Bank has approved a USD 250 million projects in India for a long-term dam safety program and improving the safety and performance of existing dams across various states. the agreement was signed between the World Bank, the Government of India, the Central Water Commission, and government representatives from 10 participating states.

  • The Second (2nd) Dam Rehabilitation and Improvement Project (DRIP-2) will help in strengthening dam safety by building dam safety guidelines, and will also bring in global experience, and introduce innovative technologies.
  • The project will cover approximately 120 dams across the states of Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Manipur, Meghalaya, Odisha, Rajasthan, and Tamil Nadu, and at the national level through the Central Water Commission (CWC).

Uttarakhand Bhookamp Alert app: India’s first earthquake early warning system

On 4th August 2021, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami launched the first-of-its-kind earthquake early warning mobile application, called ‘Uttarakhand Bhookamp Alert’,

  • Uttarakhand Bhookamp Alert app was developed by the Uttarakhand State Disaster Management Authority (USDMA) and the Indian Institute of Technology-Roorkee.
  • The main objective of the Bhookamp Alert app is to strengthen public safety.

Pakistani climber Shehroze Kashif becomes the youngest mountaineer in the world to scale Mt. K2

A 19-year old Pakistani climber Shehroze Kashif has become the youngest person in the world who has reached the summit of K2, the second-highest peak in the world.

  • Shehroze Kashif (Hails from Lahore) has achieved the feat of scaling the 8,611-metre high peak with the aid of bottled oxygen.
  • Also, Mr. Sajid Sadpara was the youngest person who climbed K2 at the age of 20. he is the son of the legendary climber Mr. Muhammad Ali Sadpara.

On 4th August 2021, Indian boxer Lovlina Borgohain has won the bronze medal in the Women’s Welter (64-69kg) semi-final bout. Borgohain was defeated by Busenaz Surmeneli of Turkey 0-5. She hails from the Golaghat district of Assam.

  • Lovlina becomes the only third Indian boxer to win a medal at the Olympics. prior to this, Six-time world champion Mary Kom clinched bronze at the 2012 London Olympics, while Vijender Singh bagged bronze in Beijing in 2008.

ESA launches Eutelsat Quantum revolutionary reprogrammable Satellite

European Space Agency (ESA) has launched the world’s 1st commercial reprogrammable satellite into space aboard Ariane 5 rocket named ‘Eutelsat Quantum’. the satellite was launched from French Guiana and is a fully flexible software-defined satellite.

  • The satellite was developed under a European Space Agency partnership project with satellite operator Eutelsat, Airbus & Surrey Satellite Technology.
  • It will allow the user to repurpose and the satellite could be reprogrammed in real-time to suit the changing purposes of the user.
