Sacagawea Day – Every year, Sacagawea Day is celebrated on December 20, aimed at honouring Sacagawea (‘Sakakawea’ or ‘Sacajawea’). Sacagawea was the daughter of a Shoshone chief and was part of the Lemhi band of the Shoshone tribe. She served as interpreter for an expedition that was exploring the Louisiana Territory at the age of 16.

Who was Sacagawea?

Sacagawea was born in May 1788 in the Lemhi Valley, near the Salmon River and the Rocky Mountains, Lemhi County, Idaho. The enemies of the Shoshones, the ‘Hidatsa’ tribe kidnapped her at the age of 12 and brought her to a Hidatsa-Mandan settlement in North Dakota. Then, She was the property of French Canadian fur trader, Toussaint Charbonneau, and became one of his wives in 1804.
