International Day for Abolition of Slavery 2023: History, Theme

International Day for Abolition of Slavery 2023: International Day for the Abolition of Slavery is observed annually on December 2nd, marking the United Nations’ adoption of the Convention for the Suppression of the Traffic in Persons and the Exploitation of Others (resolution 317 (IV) of December 2, 1949). The day reminds the global commitment to eliminating all forms of slavery and exploitation, aligning with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. It also reminds us of the situations of exploitation that a person cannot refuse due to threats, violence, coercion or abuse of power.

  • It also marks the elimination of contemporary forms of slavery, such as human trafficking, sexual exploitation, child labour and the use of children in armed conflict.
