PM Modi releases Tiger Census figures 2022: Number grows to 3,167
Prime Minister Narendra Modi released the figures of the 5th cycle of India’s Tiger Census highlighting that tiger numbers have once again increased in the country and stand at 3,167 in the wild as of 2022. The 2018 Tiger Census, released in July 2019, established the presence of 2,967 tigers in India. The animal population in the country raised by 200 or 6.7 per cent in the past four years.
Modi govt to set up 16th Finance Commission
The Central government may set up the 16th Finance Commission in 2023. A Finance Commission is constituted every 5 years as per Article 280 of the Constitution. The previous Finance Commission, headed by Chairman NK Singh, presented its report for five fiscal years (from 2021-22 to 2025-26) on November 9, 2020.
State Energy Efficiency Index 2021-22
Union Minister of Power and New & Renewable Energy, R. K. Singh released the report of the State Energy Efficiency Index (SEEI) 2021-22. The index was developed by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) with Alliance for an Energy-Efficient Economy (AEEE).
- In SEEI 2021-22, 5 states such as Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Rajasthan and Telangana – are in the Front Runner category (>60 points).
- 4 states – Assam, Haryana, Maharashtra, and Punjab – are in the Achiever category (50-60 points).
- Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Assam and Chandigarh are the top-performing states in their respective state groups.
- Telangana and Andhra Pradesh are the most improved since the last index.
International
Indian-American mathematician CR Rao awarded International Prize in Statistics
Calyampudi Radhakrishna Rao, a prominent Indian-American mathematician and statistician, will be honoured with the 2023 International Prize in Statistics, the equivalent to the Nobel Prize in the field, for his monumental work 75 years ago that revolutionised statistical thinking.
- Rao will receive the prize with an $80,000 award, this July at the biennial International Statistical Institute World Statistics Congress in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.

- He was born to a Telugu family in Hadagali, Karnataka.
- He completed His schooling in Gudur, Nuzvid, Nandigama, and Visakhapatnam, all in Andhra Pradesh.
- He studied an MSc in mathematics from Andhra University and an MA in statistics from Calcutta University in 1943.
- He completed a PhD degree at King’s College at Cambridge University.
- He obtained a DSc degree, also from Cambridge, in 1965.
- Rao has received many honours such as Padma Bhushan from the Indian Government (1968) and Padma Vibhushan in 2001.

Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Online Gambling and Regulation of Online Games Bill
The Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi signed a long-pending Bill to ban online gambling, which includes online rummy and poker with stakes in the State. The legislation called the Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Online Gambling and Regulation of Online Games Bill, also seeks to regulate online gaming including fantasy sports.
- In October 2022, the state assembly passed the Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Online Gambling and Regulation of Online Games Bill.

Savita Sri from Tamil Nadu has become the 25th woman Grandmaster of India and beat Erik Hedman of Sweden in the final of the All India Chess Championship to conquer the grandmaster title.
