- In 2002, the International Union of Soil Sciences (IUSS) recommended international observance in order to create awareness regarding the degrading condition of the soil, its impact and its prevention.
- In 2013, During the 68th UN General Assembly, the members designated December 5 as World Soil Day and in 2014, World Soil Day was observed for the first time.
