Who is Udupi Ramachandra Rao Biography

On 10th March, Google observes the 89th birthday of renowned Indian professor and scientist Udupi Ramachandra Rao who is known as “India’s Satellite Man.” Udupi Ramachandra was an Indian space scientist and chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). He became the Chairman of the Governing Council of the Physical Research Laboratory at Ahmedabad and Nehru Planetarium at Bengaluru and of the Indian Institute for Space Science and Technology (IIST) at Thiruvananthapuram.

Udupi Ramachandra Rao: Career

  • Rao began his career as a cosmic ray scientist and started working under Dr Vikram Sarabhai, which he continued at MIT. In association with the Jet Propulsion Laboratory group, he was the first to establish the continuous nature of the solar wind and its effect on geomagnetism using Mariner 2 observations.
