Railway Minister Inaugurates India’s First Aluminium Freight Rake in Odisha

Railway Minister Inaugurates India’s First Aluminium Freight Rake in Odisha – On 16th October 2022, Hindalco launched India’s first all-aluminium freight rail rakes in order to help fast-track the country’s ambitious plan to modernise freight transportation and enable large carbon savings for Indian Railways. Union minister for railways Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw Ji inaugurated the rake, “61 BOBRNALHSM1″, at Bhubaneswar railway station, Odisha.

  • The new 61-wagon rake will carry coal for Hindalco’s Aditya Smelter in Lapanga. These wagons can save 14,500 tonnes of CO2 emissions, have more carrying capacity, consume less energy and are corrosion-resistant.
  • Railways plan the potential annual CO2 reduction to the tune of over 25 lakh tonne, with a 15 – 20% shift to aluminium wagons in the coming years by deploying more than one lakh wagons.
  • Aluminium is the preferred choice for metro trains for its durability and most importantly – passenger safety.
  • It improved crashworthiness or superior crash absorption capability.
