Pravasi Bharatiya Divas – Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (Also known as प्रवासी भारतीय दिवस, Pravāsī Bhāratīya Divasa, Overseas Indian Day) is a day observed on 9 January by the Republic of India to commemorate the contribution of the Overseas Indian community towards the development of India. The day highlights the return of Mahatma Gandhi from South Africa to Mumbai on 9 January 1915.

In 2000, The day was established and is sponsored by the Ministry of External Affairs of the Government of India, the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI), the Confederation of Indian Industries and the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region.

Pravasi Bharatiya Divas: History
On this day, Mahatma Gandhi returned from South Africa to India in 1915 and led India’s freedom struggle. The Ministry of External Affairs also conducted a virtual youth PBD conference and its theme was ‘The role of the Indian diaspora.’ Pravasi Bharatiya Diwas conventions were conducted on an annual basis from 2003 till 2015.
Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Award
The government of India also presents the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Award the highest honour conferred on a Non-Resident Indian (NRI), a person of Indian origin or an organisation or institution run by these people.
The Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Award is distributed to those who have made a significant contribution to a better understanding of India abroad or have supported the cause of India, the welfare of the local Indian community, and so on.
