A polar bear plunge is an event which takes place during the winter where participants join a body of water despite the low temperature. In the United States, polar bear plunges take place to raise money for a charitable organization. In Canada, polar bear swims are usually conducted on New Year’s Day to mark the new year.
History
The oldest-documented New Year’s Day polar bear plunge event was held in 1904 when the L Street Brownies, a swim club established in 1902 in South Boston, Massachusetts.
