National Legal Services Day 2023 – Every year, India observes National Legal Services Day on November 9, a significant occasion. It aims to provide legal relief to the weaker sections of society. The day marks historical importance as the anniversary of the enactment of the Legal Services Authorities Act in 1995.

  • It also aims to raise awareness about the constitutions and related legal services which are available for Indian Citizens so that they can live a discrimination-free life.
  • National Legal Services Day offers support and help to weaker sections of society including Scheduled Tribes, Scheduled Castes, women, disabled persons, natural calamities victims, and human trafficking victims.
  • It also educates citizens about the various aspects of the Legal Services Authorities Act and litigants’ rights.

National Legal Services Day 2023: History

The Legal Services Authorities Act was passed on November 9, 1995, aimed at offering offer legal aid to poor and marginalised people. This landmark legislation directed the establishment of the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) on December 5, 1995. Since then, National Legal Services Day has been celebrated yearly. The day also creates awareness about the availability of free legal aid and alternative dispute resolution methods. The day aims to extend free legal support to those who can’t afford to hire a lawyer.

Theme of Legal Services Day 2023

The theme for National Legal Services Day 2023 is ‘Access to Justice for All: Empowering the Marginalised through Legal Awareness.’ marking emphasises the importance of providing equal access to legal resources and knowledge, especially to those who are underprivileged and marginalised.

National Legal Services Authority (NALSA):

  • The National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) was founded in the year 1995 by the Legal Services Authorities Act of 1987. It is an act of the Parliament of India to enforce the provisions of Article 39 A of the Constitution.
  • Authorities/institutions such as NALSA, Supreme Court Legal Services Committee (SCLSC), 39 High Court Legal Services Committees (HCLSCs), 37 State Legal Services Authorities (SLSAs), 673 District Legal Services Authorities (DLSAs), and 2465 Taluk Legal Services Committees (TLSCs) have been established to provide free legal aid to poor and weaker sections of society.
