National Education Day 2023– In India, National Education Day is celebrated on 11th November every year. the main purpose of the day is to commemorate the birth anniversary of Maulana Abul Kalam Azad who was the first education minister of independent India.
- In 2008, the Ministry of Human Resource Development declared this day to be observed on 11 September.
- Maulana Azad served between 15 August 1947 and 2 February 1958 as an education minister.

National Education Day 2023: Theme
- This day acknowledges and honors Maulana Azad’s contribution to the country’s education system. The theme for National Education Day 2022 is “Changing Course, Transforming Education.”
Maulana Abul Kalam Azad
- Maulana Abul Kalam Azad was born in Mecca, Saudi Arabia in 1888.
- His mother was an Arab and the daughter of Sheikh Mohammad Zaher Watri and Azad’s father, Maulana Khairuddin, was a Bengali Muslim of Afghan origins who came to Arab during the Sepoy Mutiny and proceeded to Mecca and settled there.
- He came back to Calcutta with his family in the year 1890 when Abul Kalam was 2 years old.
- Maulana Abul Kalam Azad served as the education minister of independent India for over 10 years from 1947 to 1958.
- He was posthumously honoured with India’s highest civilian award – Bharat Ratna in 1992.
- He supervised the establishment of the Department of Education of the University of Delhi, the first Indian Institute of Technology in the year 1951, and the University Grants Commission in 1953.
