Minorities Rights Day 2023: History, Significance, and Theme

Minorities Rights Day: Every year, Minorities Rights Day is observed on 18th December in India to create awareness about the respect and dignity of minorities and uphold the right to freedom and equal opportunities for the ethnic minorities in the country. It also reminds us of the importance of safeguarding the rights of all individuals, regardless of their religious, linguistic, or cultural background.

Minorities Rights Day 2023: History

In 1992, the UN General Assembly adopted the Declaration on the Rights of Persons Belonging to National or Ethnic, Religious, and Linguistic Minorities. This declaration summarised the fundamental rights and freedoms that must be guaranteed to all minority groups.

Also, the UN General Assembly designated December 18th as Minorities Rights Day to mark the adoption of this declaration. The first official celebration of Minorities Rights Day was held in 2003.

Since its designation, Minorities Rights Day has acted as a platform to raise awareness about the importance of protecting the rights of minority groups.
