Who is Florence Nightingale ?

  • Florence Nightingale is known as the founder of modern nursing and British social reformer and statistician. moreover, she was called as Lady with the Lamp. she got nursing education then, she set up the Nightingale School of Nursing, at St. Thomas’ Hospital in London in the year 1860. she was the first lady who achieved the Order of Merit award in 1907.

  • In the year 1953, Dorothy Sutherland who was an fficial with the U.S. Department of Health, Education and Welfare, put a proposal to celebrate Nurses Day to the front of President Dwight D. Eisenhower. but, his proposal was not accepted by Presiden.
  • in 1965, International Council of Nurses (ICN) decided to celebrate Nurses Day.
  • in addition, the day of 12th may was finally officially declared as ‘International Nurses Day’ to remember Florence Nightingale. this day reminds us Florence Nightingale’s birthday.
