• In 2013, the UN General Assembly recognized this day to condemn all such attacks on journalists but, it also urged all member countries to protect journalists from threats to their lives and ensure that the victims get access to the required remedies.
• UN selected this date because two French journalists Ghislaine Dupont and Claude Verlon were killed while reporting in Mali on November 2nd, 2013.
• Over 12,000 journalists were assassinated between 2006 and 2020 for just doing their job.
