International Day of Radiology 2023: Every year, World Radiography Day or International Day of Radiology is observed on 8th November to commemorate the discovery of X-radiation, or X-rays. It also aims to promote the role of medical imaging in modern healthcare.

World Radiography Day is an international healthcare awareness campaign. The day aims to raise public knowledge of the critical role that radiotherapy, diagnostic imaging and radiographers play in healthcare management.

• The theme for World Radiography Day 2023 is “Celebrating Patient Safety”, marking the critical role that professionals play in maintaining the effectiveness of healthcare systems and ensuring the well-being of patients, which extends beyond the field of radiation protection.
• The theme for International Day of Radiology 2021 is ‘Interventional Radiology – Active care for the patient’
• In 2020 – Radiologists and radiographers supporting patients during COVID-19

International Day of Radiology 2023: History

• World Radiography Day commemorates the November 8, 1895, discovery of X-radiation, or X-rays, by German physicist Wilhelm Conrad Rontgen.
• In 1901, Rontgen became the first recipient of the Nobel Prize in Physics.
• The European Society of Radiology (ESR), the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA), and the American College of Radiology (ACR) collaborated to mark the first World Radiography Day in 2012.
• The European Day of Radiology, which took place on February 10, 2011, in observance of Wilhelm Rontgen’s death anniversary on February 10, 1923, was the forerunner of this event. It was conducted by the ESR.
