Human Rights Day 2023: Every year, Human Rights Day is observed on 10th December across the world to honour the day in 1948 when the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR).
- The main purpose of this day is to encourage countries to create equal opportunities for everyone and address the issues of inequality, exclusion, and discrimination.
- This year marks the 74th anniversary of the adoption of the UDHR and the 72nd Human Rights Day.
Human Rights Day 2023: History
- In 1950, Human Rights Day was formally instituted after the UNGA passed resolution 423 (V).
- the Assembly invited all states (members and non-members) and interested organizations to celebrate the proclamation of the UDHR and exert increasing efforts in this field of human progress.
Human Rights Day 2023: Theme
- The theme for 2023 is: “Consolidating and Sustaining Human Rights Culture into the Future”.
- The theme for 2022 is “Dignity, Freedom, and Justice for All”.
- The theme for 2021 is “Equality – Reducing inequalities, advancing human rights“.
Facts
- The Human Rights Council has 47 elected United Nations Member States and its role is to prevent inequality, abuses and discrimination, protect the most vulnerable, and punish the perpetrators of human rights violations.
