Every year, Ellis Island Day is observed on January 1, aimed at celebrating an island. It served as a gateway to America during the immigration wave of 1892 through 1954. Around 17 million people immigrated to America through the immigration station at Ellis Island from 1892 to 1954. The island includes the Statue of Liberty, a national museum of immigration, and Ellis Island Immigrant Hospital.
History
The immigration station received immigrants on January 1, 1892, and by June 15, 1897. In 1965, Ellis Island received the Statue of Liberty National Monument, and in 1965, President Lyndon B. Johnson approved its redevelopment.
