Every year, the day of 1st March is observed as Zero Discrimination Day across the world. This day highlights the urgent need to take action against the inequalities in income, age, sex, health status, color, race, occupation, sexual orientation, religion, gender, and ethnicity. United Nations along with other international organizations focus on concluding all forms of inequality and discrimination.

The main purpose of this day is to ensure the right to equality, inclusion, and protection of all people without any discrimination in their laws and policies to live a full life with dignity regardless of any barriers.

Zero Discrimination Day 2024: History

Zero Discrimination Day is a global movement and is marked on March 1 every year. The day is a call to action for eradicating discrimination in all forms and promoting social inclusion and tolerance. In December 2013, UNAIDS Director Michel Sidibé created the Zero Discrimination Day. The day is a holiday battling intolerance towards those living with HIV/AIDS, Zero Discrimination Day was celebrated to finish the stigma and unfair behavior towards different people.

The day was first observed on March 1, 2014, when UNAIDS, a joint United Nations program on Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS), launched its Zero Discrimination Campaign on ‘World AIDS Day’ in December 2013.

The theme for Zero Discrimination Day 2024 is “To protect everyone’s health, protect everyone’s rights.”

The theme of Zero Discrimination Day 2023 is “Save lives: Decriminalise” highlighting how the decriminalisation of key populations and people living with HIV saves lives and helps advance the end of the AIDS pandemic.

Significance:

The main objective of the day is to promote equality, inclusion, and tolerance across the globe. Discrimination leads to violate human rights and creates barriers to accessing education, healthcare, and job opportunities, which eventually perpetuates poverty and inequality.

As per the UNAIDS, “Criminalisation drives discrimination and structural inequalities. It robs people of the prospect of healthy and fulfilling lives and it holds back the end of AIDS. We must end criminalisation to save lives.”
