Union Cabinet approves more castes in STs List

Union Cabinet approves more castes in STs List – Prime Minister (PM) of India Narendra Modi chaired Union Cabinet on 14th September 2022 and has given approval for the inclusion of several communities in the Schedule Tribes (STs) list of the Constitution across 5 states including Himachal Pradesh (HP), Tamil Nadu (TN), Karnataka and Uttar Pradesh (UP) and Chhattisgarh, as a part of the Constitution (Scheduled Tribes) Order (Amendment) Bill 2022.

New Communities in STs List:

  • Hatti community (living in the Trans-Giri region of HP) will be added to the Schedule Tribes (STs) list of the Constitution.
  • The Binjhia community has been added to the list and approved synonyms for tribes to 12 existing tribes in the ST list including Bharia (variations added include Bhumia and Bhuyian), Gadhwa (Gadwa), Dhanwar (Dhanawar, Dhanuwar), Nagesia (Nagasia, Kisan), and Pondh (Pond), among others.
  • The inclusion of ‘Narikoravan’ and ‘Kurivikkaran’ communities have proposed for the list of state’s STs.
  • Govt approved ‘Betta-Kuruba’ as a synonym for the Kadu Kuruba tribe In Karnataka.
  • Cabinet has also brought the Gond community residing in 13 districts of Uttar Pradesh (UP) under the ST list from the Scheduled Caste list. Gond community includes Dhuria, Nayak, Ojha, Pathari, and Rajgond.
  • Under the act, the member of the communities newly listed in the revised list of STs will be benefited from major schemes including Post Matric Scholarship, National Overseas Scholarship, National Fellowship, Top Class Education, Concessional Loans from National Scheduled Tribes Finance and Development Corporation, Hostels for ST boys and girls etc.

Cabinet approves signing of guarantees for hosting FIFA U-17 Womens‘ Football World Cup

  • The Union Cabinet has given its approval for the signing of Guarantees for hosting the Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) Under 17 Women’s World Cup 2022 in India.
  • The 7th edition of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup 2022 will be held in India between 11th October and 30th October 2022 in Navi Mumbai (Maharashtra), Goa and Bhubaneswar (Odisha).
  • India will host the first-ever FIFA women’s competition and India successfully hosted the FIFA Under-17 Men’s World Cup India-2017.

About FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup

  • FIFA will conduct a biennial world championship for female players who are aged under 17. The 6th edition of the FIFA Under-17 Women’s World Cup was held in Uruguay in 2018. Spain became the winner of the FIFA Under-17 Women’s World Cup.
