History of Rizal Day
Dr. José Rizal played an important role in starting the revolution against the Spanish colonists. Dr. José Rizal was born on June 19, 1861, in the town of Calamba and was a doctor and a novelist. In 1887, his novel “Noli me Tanger,” was published. His novel condemned the corrupt rule of the Philippines by Spaniards.
Rizal Day was first formed with a decree by President Emilio Aguinaldo issued on December 20, 1898, and observed on December 30, 1898, as a national day of mourning for Rizal in Malolos and all victims of the Spanish colonial rule of the Philippines.
In 1898, the 1st president of the Philippines, Emilio Aguinaldo, marked the first Rizal Day as a national day of mourning for Rizal and all the casualties of the Spanish colonial rule of the Philippines. Daet, Camarines Norte was the first town to follow the decree, constructing a monument designed by Lt. Col. Antonio Sanz and funded by the townsfolk of Camarines Norte and the rest of the Bicol Region.
On February 1, 1902, the Philippine Commission enacted Act No. 345, which made December 30 a public holiday.
