Radio Astronomer Govind Swarup passed away

On 7th September, 91 years old Govind Swarup has taken his last breath. he was suffering from age-related health complications. he used to be known as ‘Father of Indian Radio Astronomy.’

About Govind Swarup –

  • Govind Swarup served as director of the Pune-based National Centre for Radio Astrophysics (NCRA) of the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR). he gave a lot of contributions in the radio astronomy field. in India, he also set up the 1st research groups and equipment.
  • He played an important role in the discovery of ‘type-U’ solar busts and he made the Ooty Radio Telescope and the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) array in Pune. in the year 1973, he was honoured with Padma Shri and he earned Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize in 1972. later, he got Khwarizmi International Award (1999) and the Grote Reber Medal.
