PM Modi launches torch relay for 44th Chess Olympiad – Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi launched the historic torch relay for the 44th Chess Olympiad on 19th June 2022 at the Indira Gandhi Stadium, New Delhi in a glittering ceremony. During this occasion, FIDE President Arkady Dvorkovich, Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Shri. Anurag Singh Thakur, Minister of State for Sports Shri. Nishith Pramanik, Grandmaster Vishwanathan Anand, the Indian Chess contingent and members of Chess Federations from various countries attended the event.

  • PM Modi handed it over to Grandmaster Vishwanathan Anand.
  • The torch will be brought to 75 cities in a period of 40 days before the final culmination at Mahabalipuram near Chennai. 
  • The 44th Chess Olympiad will be held in Chennai from 28th July to 10th August 2022.
