Parsi New Year 2023: Date, History and Significance – Parsi New Year is a traditional festival celebrated by the Parsi community, which follows the Zoroastrian faith. The day is also known as ‘Navroz’ or ‘Nowruz’. The day aims to mark the beginning of the Iranian calendar year and usually falls on the first day of the month of Farvardin. Why Do Parsis Have 2 New Year?

Parsis has two New Year celebrations due to historical and cultural reasons. In 2023, the Parsi New Year will be observed on August 16th, 2023, while the Gregorian New Year was celebrated on January 1st, 2023.

Zoroastrian Religious New Year (Navroz)

  • The New Year, also known as “Jamshedi Navroz,” will be based on the Zoroastrian calendar.

  • The day originated in ancient Persia and is an important religious and cultural festival for Parsis.

Shahenshahi New Year

The Shahenshahi calendar, also known as the “Kadmi” calendar, is a different calendar system that has been used by Parsis. The Shahenshahi calendar is based on a later version of the Zoroastrian calendar and is marked by a smaller segment of the Parsi community. The Shahenshahi New Year is celebrated 6 months or 180 days after Navroz, and typically falls in August or September, depending on the specific calendar calculations.
