History and Significance
In 1968, Nauru became a sovereign republic on January 31 and designated independence from England. In 1945, When the Japanese troops came to Nauru and deported 1,200 native islanders to the Chuuk Lagoon (or Truk) as laborers. In 1946, the Nauruans returned home on the day when the Japanese lost. January 31 was designated as the Independence Day of Nauru to mark the event.
