Every year, National Seed Swap Day is observed on the last Saturday in January. In 2024, it takes place on January 27. The day aims to honor the great U.S. tradition of swapping seeds with neighbors. January last week lays the chilly winds of winter to rest and indicates the coming of spring — a season of cherry blossoms, outdoor picnics, and fresh plantations.
History and Significance
“Washington Gardener Magazine” editor, Kathy Jentz established the day. Jentz organized the first seed-swapping event in Washington, D.C., on January 26, 2006. The 4th Saturday of January was officially declared as National Seed Swap Day.
