National Safety Day 2024: Purpose, History, Theme

National Safety Day in India is observed on March 4 every year, aimed at generating awareness and commitment to working safely. The day was created by the National Safety Council to increase awareness of all the guidelines of safety measures, including road safety, workplace safety, the safety of human health, as well as the environment. The day aims to renew the commitment of employees and the general public to work safely throughout the year.

Every year, National Safety Day is marked on March 4. In India, March 4 also marks the begining of the National Safety Week. In 2024, National Safety Day take place on a Monday (4 March).

The main purpose of this day is to promote the Safety, Health, and Environment (SHE) movement in the country. Also renews the commitment of employees and the public to work safely.

History

The Ministry of Labour and Employment of the Government of India formed the National Safety Council as a self-financing non-governing body on March 4, 1996. In 2000, the National Safety Council was designated as a public trust under the Bombay Public Trust Act of 1950. In 1972, National Safety Day was proclaimed on the day the National Safety Council was founded.

  • In 2022, the theme of National Safety Day is “Nurture young minds Develop a safety culture”
