Every year, National Heroes Day is observed on December 31. The day also provides East Timorese citizens the opportunity to revisit their short but bloody history that led to their independence. People joined a violent independence struggle against Indonesia under the leadership of Nicolau Lobato, who was arrested and killed by the invading army.
