Mudd Day – Each year, Mudd Day is observed on December 20. The day aims to commemorate Dr. Samuel Mudd’s birthday. John Wilkes Booth shot President Abraham Lincoln to death on April 14, 1865. He moved to Mudd’s house in the early hours of April 15 with conspirator David Herold to undergo surgery on his broken leg before entering Virginia.
Who was Samuel Mudd?
Samuel Alexander Mudd Sr. was born on December 20, 1833, in Charles County, Maryland, U.S. and died on January 10, 1883, at the age of 49 in Waldorf, Maryland, U.S. He was an American physician who was imprisoned for conspiring with John Wilkes Booth concerning the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. Mudd served as a doctor and tobacco farmer in Southern Maryland. Mudd was forgiven by President Andrew Johnson and released from prison in 1869.
