Former IAS Officer M. Rajendran’s historical novel Kala Pani (Black Water) has won the Sahitya Akademi award for 2022. the novel depicts the defeat and exile of 72 persons — including Vengai Periya Udayanna Devar, ruler of Sivaganga, and Duraisamy, son of Chinna Marudu — after the Kalayakoil war.
- Kaala Paani (The Story of the First King Who Was Abducted) has been written by Rajendran, a retired IAS officer who served as the Tamil Nadu Cooperative Society Election Commissioner.
- Central Government Sahitya Akademi Award is presented for the best literature-based novels written in major languages including Tamil, Malayalam, and Kannada.
