M. Rajendran’s ‘Kala Pani’ bags 2022 Sahitya Akademi award

Former IAS Officer M. Rajendran’s historical novel Kala Pani (Black Water) has won the Sahitya Akademi award for 2022. the novel depicts the defeat and exile of 72 persons — including Vengai Periya Udayanna Devar, ruler of Sivaganga, and Duraisamy, son of Chinna Marudu — after the Kalayakoil war.

  • Kaala Paani (The Story of the First King Who Was Abducted) has been written by Rajendran, a retired IAS officer who served as the Tamil Nadu Cooperative Society Election Commissioner.
  • Central Government Sahitya Akademi Award is presented for the best literature-based novels written in major languages including Tamil, Malayalam, and Kannada.
