Jina Mahsa Amini wins EU’s Sakharov Prize

Jina Mahsa Amini wins EU’s Sakharov Prize – The European Union parliament presented its annual Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought to Iranian woman Mahsa Amini who died in police custody in 2022 and the “Woman, Life, Freedom” movement in Iran.

Her death caused protests that showed the most serious challenge to the Iranian authorities in decades. Ms Amini and the Iranian “Woman, Life, Freedom” movement is now in a distinguished list of previous winners, including Pakistani campaigner Malala Yousafzai and South Africa’s Nelson Mandela.

EU’s Sakharov Prize carries a €50,000 (£43,500; $53,000) endowment. The award will be presented in a European Parliament ceremony in December 2023.
