International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons 2022 – International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons is observed by the United Nations on 26th September across the world. the main purpose of this day is to raise public awareness about the threat posed to humanity by nuclear weapons and the necessity for their total elimination.
- The day also creates an opportunity to educate the public and their leaders about the real benefits of eliminating such weapons, and the social and economic costs of perpetuating them.
International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons: History
- In 1946, The first resolution of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) was introduced.
- in the first Special Session of the UNGA, Nuclear disarmament was made a priority objective in 1978.
- The day of August 29 was declared as the International Day against Nuclear Tests to create public awareness about nuclear weapons in 2009.
- the UNGA declared September 26 as the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons which marks the high-level UNGA meeting on nuclear disarmament was held on September 26th, 2013.
