International Day against Nuclear Tests 2022

The International Day against Nuclear Tests is observed on August 29 every year to increase awareness about the effects of nuclear weapon test explosions or any other nuclear explosions and the need for their cessation as one of the means of achieving the goal of a nuclear-weapon-free world.

  • This day was established on December 2, 2009, at the 64th session of the United Nations General Assembly by the resolution 64/35.
  • General Assembly announced the day of September 26th as the “International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons”.

International Day against Nuclear Tests: History

  • The 64th session of the United Nations General Assembly declared 29 August the International Day against Nuclear Tests through the unanimous adoption of its resolution 64/35 On 2 December 2009.
  • The Preamble of the resolution highlights that “every effort should be made to end nuclear tests in order to avert devastating and harmful effects on the lives and health of people” and that “the end of nuclear tests is one of the key means of achieving the goal of a nuclear-weapon-free world.”

What is CTBT

  • in 1996, An international treaty (also called Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT)) came into existence to put an end to all sorts of nuclear weapons testing.
