India’s first underwater tunnel under the Hooghly River in West Bengal

India’s first underwater tunnel is being constructed under the Hooghly River in West Bengal as part of the East-West Metro Corridor. the cost of the project will be around Rs 120 crores. India’s first underwater tunnel will be built in 520-meter long. The tunnel is the Indian version of Eurostar’s London-Paris corridor and is being built 13 meters below the riverbed and 33 meters below ground level.

  • The tunnel will contain an internal diameter of 5.55 meters and an external diameter of 6.1 meters.
  • The spacing between the up and down tunnels is 16.1 meters center-to-center.
