Former rebel warrior Gustavo Petro elected president of Colombia – Former rebel fighter Gustavo Petro has been elected as the new president of Colombia and secured 50.5% of the vote in the second round of Colombia’s presidential election held on June 19.
- Gustavo Petro will be the first leftist president of the country.
- He spent many years in Colombia’s Parliament and served in the lower house, the Chamber of Representatives, from 1991-94 and then from 1998-2006, before entering the Senate.
- He also was Mayor of the capital city of Bogota from 2012 to 2015.
