PM Modi to launch week-long programme ‘Sankalp Saptaah’ for Aspirational Blocks on Sep 30

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will launch a week-long programme for Aspirational Blocks in the country called Sankalp Saptaah in New Delhi On 30 September 2023. 2,00,000 people including block and panchayat level functionaries, farmers, and persons from other walks of life, will participate in the programme virtually.

  • Sankalp Saptaah is associated with the effective implementation of the Aspirational Blocks Programme ABP. Prime Minister launched the nationwide programme on 7th January 2023, aimed at improving governance at the block level and enhancing the quality of life of citizens.

4th edition of Indo-Latin America Cultural Festival by ICCR

The 4th edition of the Indo-Latin America Cultural Festival managed by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) kicked off in New Delhi on 28 September 2023. A total of 34 artists of three countries – Colombia, Ecuador and Chile have joined the two-day festival. It aims to showcase the rich cultural heritage of Latin America. the festival brings together key stakeholders from India and Latin America to deliberate on the prospects of cultural and educational collaborations.

Taiwan unveils first domestically developed submarine

Taiwan launched its first domestically developed submarine. The vessel was officially named “Narwhal” in English and “Hai Kun” in Mandarin after a mythical massive fish that can also fly. It will help in boosting its military deterrence in the face of a growing threat from China.

North Korea amends constitution to bolster & expand nuclear force

North Korea amended its constitution to bolster and expand its nuclear force. The parliament added the law to North Korea’s constitution after two days of meetings. It was passed by North Korea’s Supreme People’s Assembly (SPA), where leader Kim Jong Un addressed participants.

2nd edition of Himalayan Film Festival begins in Ladakh

In Ladakh, the 2nd edition of the Himalayan Film Festival (THFF) kicked off on 29 September 2023. Netflix India’s Jaane Jaan directed by Sujoy Ghosh and Ladakhi’s Short Film Last Days of Summer directed by Stenzin Tankong have announced the opening of the five-day long film festival.

Harry Potter actor Sir Michael Gambon dies at 82

Harry Potter actor Sir Michael Gambon died in a hospital at the age of 82. he was suffering from pneumonia. Sir Michael was best known for playing Professor Albus Dumbledore in six of the eight Harry Potter films. He was also in Fantastic Mr. Fox, played French detective Maigret, and starred in The Singing Detective.

Father of Green Revolution in India, MS Swaminathan passes away in Chennai

Agricultural scientist Dr MS Swaminathan, known as the father of India’s Green Revolution, passed away in Chennai at the age of 98 on 28 September 2023 at his residence. Swaminathan brought a social revolution through his policies to rescue India from famine-like circumstances in the 1960s.

  • He founded the MS Swaminathan Research Foundation and played an important role in developing high-yield variety seeds of wheat, which led to the green revolution in India.
  • Swaminathan was honoured with numerous international awards and honours, including the Albert Einstein World Science Award in 1986, the first World Food Prize in 1987, the Tyler Prize for Environmental Achievement in 1991, and the Planet and Humanity Medal of the International Geographical Union in 2000.
  • He is also the recipient of the Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan and Padma Vibhushan.
