National

Ministry of Tourism to organise six-day mega event “Bharat Parv”

The six-day mega event “Bharat Parv” event will be organized by the Government of India at the Lawns and Gyan Path in front of Red Fort, Delhi from 26th to 31st January 2023, as part of the Republic Day Celebrations.

  • Bharat Parv was previously in conducted 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2020 ( and virtual in the year 2021) at the Lawns and Gyan Path in front of Red Fort.
  • The event will carry a Food Festival, Handicraft mela, folk and tribal dance performances, Performances by cultural troupes, a Display of Republic Day Tableaux, illumination of Red Fort and so on.
  • Branding and promotion of Dekho Apna Desh, Ek Bharat Shrestha Bharat, G20 and Mission LIFE are to be undertaken during the event.

Chandigarh gets North India’s largest floating solar power project

UT Administrator Banwari Lal Purohit inaugurated northern India’s largest floating solar power project of 2000kWp worth Rs 11.70 crore at waterworks, Sector 39. He also inaugurated a 500kWp floating solar project with fountains at Dhanas Lake. 

  • the 500kWp floating solar power plant with fountains was installed at Dhanas Lake at a total cost of Rs 3.34 crore, including 10 years of O&M for the plant as well as for the fountains.
  • CREST (Chandigarh Renewable Energy and Science & Technology Promotion Society) designed and executed such projects.
  • The projects will aim to generate a minimum of 35 lakh units (kWh) of solar energy per year with 20% module efficiency.

BPCL to set up 1 GW renewable energy plant in Rajasthan

State-owned Bharat Petroleum Corporation (BPCL) and Rajasthan signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) o set up a 1 gigawatt (GW) renewable energy (RE) plant in the state. BPCL is looking to expand its renewable portfolio and reach 1 GW of renewable energy by 2025 and 10 GW by 2040.

  • Bharat Petroleum will target the goal of net zero in Scope 1 and 2 emissions by the year 2040.

3rd edition of annual Orange festival 2023

3rd edition of the annual Orange festival 2023 is being held at Rusoma village, under Kohima district in Nagaland. Department of Horticulture, Agriculture, Rural Development, Land Resources and Kohima Smart City organised the two-day festival.

  • The Orange Festival in Rusoma Village of Kohima district will recognise and celebrate the hard work of the orange growers.
  • It will also facilitate the market linkages to sell their produce at one hub.
  • It featured several stalls such as the sale of handicrafts, organic vegetables and fruits, food items, the sale of orange saplings, a workshop on orange and coffee plantations and a signature campaign on “Beti Bachao Beti Padhao.

7th ‘Nature and Birds Festival’ in Uttar Pradesh

Department of Forestry and Tourism of the State Government of Uttar Pradesh organized the 7th ‘Nature and Bird Festival’ at the Vijaysagar Bird Sanctuary in Mahoba District, Uttar Pradesh. It was previously known as the ‘UP Bird Fair’.

  • The UP Bird and Nature Festival 2023 will be held from February 1 to 3 at Vijay Sagar Bird Sanctuary.

Norovirus cases detected in Kerala

The Kerala Health Department confirmed two cases of the gastrointestinal infection norovirus in class 1 students in Ernakulam district. Infected people developed symptoms such as diarrhoea, abdominal pain, vomiting, nausea, a high temperature, headache, and body aches.

  • The virus is capable of surviving low temperatures, and outbreaks tend to be more common during the winter and in colder countries — that is why it is sometimes referred to as “winter vomiting disease”.
  • Norovirus leads to diarrhoea, vomiting, nausea, and abdominal pain. Being a diarrhoeal disease.
  • it also leads to dehydration, so drinking plenty of fluids is recommended.

Visakhapatnam railway station receives ‘Green Railway Station Certification’ with highest Platinum rating

Visakhapatnam railway station of East Coast Railway was awarded the ‘Green Railway Station Certification with the highest rating of Platinum’ by the Indian Green Building Council (IGBC). Visakhapatnam railway station received ‘Green Railway Station Certification’ for adopting green concepts thereby reducing the adverse environmental impact.

  • Visakhapatnam secured 82 out of 100 points in six environmental categories such as sustainable facilities, health, hygiene, energy and water efficiency, smart green initiatives, innovation and development.

Shamalbhai B Patel named chairman of Amul

Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF) announced the appointment of Shamalbhai B Patel as its chairman and Valamjibhai Humbal as vice chairman. GCMMF is made up of 18 member unions covering 33 districts.

  • Shamalbhai B Patel is serving as the chairman of Sabarkantha District Cooperative Milk Producers Union Ltd.
  • Valamjibhai Humbal has been chairman of the Kutch District Cooperative Milk Producers Union Ltd.

JPMorgan gets RBI nod for new India chief executive officer Prabdev Singh

JPMorgan Chase & Co. got approval from India’s central bank to name Prabdev Singh as the lender’s chief executive officer in the country. Prabdev Singh will serve as the lender’s chief executive officer for a three-year term.

  • He was also JPMorgan’s interim CEO since November and replaced Madhav Kalyan who — in October — was named head of payments for Asia Pacific.
  • He is a trained engineer, had worked for a decade at HSBC Holdings Plc before joining JPMorgan in 2010.

Chris Hipkins takes over as Prime Minister of New Zealand

Chris Hipkins took over as the 41st Prime Minister of New Zealand and was sworn in by the country’s governor-general, Cindy Kiro, during a ceremony in the capital, Wellington. Jacinda Ardern announced her resignation as the New Zealand PM the last week. Chris Hipkins served as education and police minister.

India-Egypt signs MoU to exchange programmes for TV and Radio

India and Egypt signed an MOU to facilitate content exchange, capacity building, and Co-Productions between Prasar Bharati and the National Media Authority of Egypt. The MoU was signed by Anurag Singh Thakur and Sameh Hassan Shoukry.

  • The MOU will help Prasar Bharati to expand the reach of DD India Channel to showcase the country’s progress through programs focussed on the economy, technology, social development and also the rich cultural heritage.
  • The broadcasters will exchange their programs of different genres including Sports, News, Culture, Entertainment and many more areas on a bilateral basis

Padma Awards 2023 announced

A total of 106 Padma awards have been announced including six Padma Vibhushan, nine Padma Bhushan and 91 Padma Shri. 19 of the awardees are women and the list also includes 2 persons from the category of Foreigners/NRI/PIO/OCI and 7 Posthumous awardees.

  • Former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister and Samajwadi Party (SP) patriarch Mulayam Singh Yadav, former Karnataka Chief Minister S M Krishna, Gujarat architect and educationist Balkrishna Doshi, tabla player Zakir Hussain, mathematician S R Srinivasa Vardhan, and ORS treatment pioneer Dilip Mahalanabis have been conferred the Padma Vibhushan.

901 Police personnel to be conferred with Police Medals

On the occasion of Republic Day 2023, A total of 901 Police personnel have been awarded Police Medals. The police Medal for Gallantry has been awarded to 140, President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service to 93 and Police Medal for Meritorious Service has been awarded to 668 Police personnel.

  • Police Medal for Gallantry (PMG) is awarded on the ground of Conspicuous Gallantry in saving life and property, or in preventing crime or arresting criminals.
  • President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service (PPM) is awarded for a specially distinguished record in Police Service.
  • The police Medal for Meritorious Service (PM) is awarded for valuable service characterized by resource and devotion to duty.

Ministry of Jal Shakti Announces Winners for ‘Water Heroes Share Your Stories Contest’ for The Month of November 2022

The Department of Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation, Ministry of Jal Shakti has launched the ‘Water Heroes: Share Your Stories’ contest. Till date, three editions of the contest have been launched on the MyGov portal.

  • ‘Water Heroes Share Your Stories Contest’ aims to promote the value of water, in general, and for supporting country-wide efforts on water conservation and sustainable development of water resources.
  • It raises awareness for water conservation by enhancing knowledge and sharing experiences of water heroes.
  • It creates an attitude towards water conservation and management so that a behavioural change can be created amongst all stakeholders.
