The 4th Environment and Climate Sustainability Working Group (ECSWG) and Environment and Climate Ministers meeting is scheduled to be held in Chennai from July 26-28, 2023. The three-day meeting will act as a platform for around 300 delegates from G20 member countries, invitee countries, and several International Organisations.

Constitution (STs) Order (5th Amendment) Bill

Parliament passed the Constitution (Scheduled Tribes) Order (Fifth Amendment) Bill, 2022. The Lok Sabha already cleared the Bill. The Bill will amend the Constitution (Scheduled Tribes) Order 1950. The Bill includes the Dhanuhar, Dhanuwar, Kisan, Saunra, Saonra, and Binjhia communities in the list of Scheduled Tribes in Chhattisgarh.

  • Also, The Bill will include Bhuinya, Bhuiyan, and Bhuyan communities as synonyms of the Bharia Bhumia community.
  • It includes three Devanagari versions of the name of the Pando community.

  • On July 25th, 2023, Lok Sabha passed the Multi-State Co-operative Societies (Amendment) Bill, 2022. The bill will amend the Multi-State Co-operative Societies Act, of 2002. It will help in strengthening governance, enhancing transparency, increasing accountability, and reforming electoral processes in Multi-State Cooperative Societies.
  • A separate Cooperation Ministry will be formed under the bill.

International

UAE Reports New MERS-CoV Case

United Arab Emirates (UAE) informed the World Health Organization (WHO) of a newly confirmed case of Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus (MERS-CoV). A 28-year-old infected male from Al Ain City was admitted to the hospital on June 8. He had symptoms a nasopharyngeal swab tested positive for MERS-CoV.

China replaces its foreign minister Qin Gang with its predecessor Wang Yi

The Chinese government removed Qin Gang from the post of Foreign Minister and appointed Wang Yi. The announcement came a month after Qin’s last public appearance. Qin Gang replaced Wang as foreign minister in December last year.

Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhya has been elected as the new Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court, As per the notification released by the Central Government on July 25th, 2023. Justice Nitin Jamdar is one of the senior judges of the Bombay High Court. He served as the Acting Chief Justice since the retirement of Chief Justice R D Dhanuka in May after serving for three days.

IMF raises India’s growth forecast to 6.1% for current fiscal

International Monetary Fund (IMF) increased India’s growth forecast, projecting a Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth of 6.1% in the current fiscal. In the World Economic Outlook in April, the IMF projected India’s GDP at 5.9% in the current fiscal. The IMF keeps the GDP growth projection for the fiscal year 2024-2025 unchanged at 6.3%.

India finished 2nd on the medals tally at the ISSF Junior Shooting World Championships 2023 in Changwon, South Korea. Indian shooters received 17 medals including 6 Gold, 6 Silver, and 5 Bronze. Abhinav Shaw and Kamaljeet won two golds each. Sainyam received three medals — gold in the 10m air pistol women, and a bronze each in the 10m air pistol mixed team and women’s team events.

International Cricket Council (ICC) punished India women’s team skipper Harmanpreet Kaur for her aggressive behavior during the third ODI against Bangladesh. She is now suspended for the next two international matches following two separate breaches of the ICC Code of Conduct.

  • She was found guilty of breaching article 2.8 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, relating to “showing dissent at an umpire’s decision.

India’s Kidambi Srikanth and HS Prannoy joined the second round of the Japan Open badminton Tournament in Tokyo. Srikanth defeated Taiwan’s Chou Tien-Chen 21-13, 21-13 in the first-round match, Prannoy beat World No. 5 Li Shifeng of China 21-17, 21-13. India’s top women’s duo of Gayatri Gopichand and Treesa Jolly also joined the second round and beat locals Yui Suizu and Sayaka Hobara 11-21, 21-15, 21-14.

Veteran journalist Shirish Kanekar passes away in Mumbai

journalist Shirish Kanekar

Veteran journalist-author-columnist Shirish Kanekar passed away at the age of 80 in Mumbai due to a heart attack. Kanekar served at Marathi and English language publications like Loksatta, Indian Express, Samana, and Free Press Journal. His collection of stories ‘Lagaon Batti’ was honored with the Maharashtra Literary Parishad Award for Best Comedy.

  • He was known for his books on cricket, and Bollywood movies including ‘Nut Bolt Bolpat’, ‘Kanekari’, And ‘Cricket Vedh’, among others.
