Government of Goa Launches Vision for All School Eye Health

Goa Govt has launched the Vision for All School Eye Health program in partnership with OneSight EssilorLuxottica Foundation and Prasad Netralaya. it is an extension of the current Vision for All Goa eye health program. The Vision for All Goa eye health program screened 50,000 citizens as well as provided free spectacles to 16,000 people in need during its monthly camps.

  • The Vision for All School Eye Health aims to train 2000 teachers on basic visual acuity tests for the children in their respective schools, followed by detailed refraction by qualified professionals from Prasad Netralaya.
  • OneSight EssilorLuxottica Foundation targets to provide 25,000 free spectacles to children identified with refractive error.

‘Har Gaon Hariyali’ initiative records plantation of 90 lakh saplings during current fiscal in J&K

In Jammu and Kashmir, Government’s ambitious initiative ‘Har Gaon Hariyali’ recorded a plantation of 90,00,000 saplings during the current fiscal against the set target of plantation of 1.35 Crore seedlings. The UT Government launched the ‘Har Gaon Hariyali’ initiative with the vision of ‘Green Jammu and Kashmir’ to ensure sustainable development and promote climate justice across J&K.

  • The department aims to bring two third geographical area of J&K under the forest and tree cover.

Uttarakhand Tableau Wins First Prize in Republic Day Parade 2023

The colourful Uttarakhand tableau won the top prize at the 74th Republic Day parade and showcased the state’s wildlife and religious sites. Army’s Punjab Regiment has been adjudged the best marching contingent among the three services. Gujarat’s tableau emerged as the numero uno in the popular choice segment.

  • Uttarakhand won the first prize for its tableau, followed by Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh in the second and third positions respectively.
  • The tableau of the Ministry of Tribal Affairs (Eklavya Model Residential Schools) won the best prize among the ministries and departments.

Air Marshal A.P. Singh to new Vice Chief of Indian Air Force

Air Marshal A P Singh has been appointed as the new Vice Chief of the Indian Air Force and will replace Air Marshal Sandeep Singh, who will retire from service on January 31, 2023.

  • Air Marshal A P Singh is currently serving as the Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Central Air Command. He will assume charge as the Vice Chief.
  • He was commissioned into the fighter stream of the IAF on December 21, 1984.

  • Air Marshal A P Singh is an alumnus of the National Defence Academy, Defence Services Staff College and National Defence College.
  • He is a Qualified Flying Instructor and has an Experimental Test Pilot with more than 4,900 hours of service flying on a variety of fixed-wing and rotary-wing aircraft.
  • His operational tenures include being the Flight Commander and Commanding Officer of a MiG 27 squadron and Air Officer Commanding an air base.

Madhvendra Singh appointed as the first CEO of the Gujarat Maritime Cluster

Madhvendra Singh has been appointed as the first Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Gujarat Maritime Cluster by Gujarat Ports Infrastructure Company Limited. The Gujarat Maritime Cluster is going to host an array of maritime, and shipping industry companies and service providers along with relevant government regulatory agencies at GIFT City in Gandhinagar.

  • It will be a ‘one-stop solution’ for all maritime services in the region with economic development, employment generation and industry-academia coordination.

Dutch player Anish Giri wins Tata Steel Masters 2023

Dutch player Anish Giri, five times the runner-up in Wijk aan Zee, won the 85th edition of Tata Steel Chess after pouncing on a blunder by Richard Rapport while Jorden van Foreest took down long-term leader Nodirbek Abdusattorov. Magnus Carlsen defeated Arjun Erigaisi on demand to catch Nodirbek in a tie for 2nd place, while Wesley So finished 4th.

  • The Tata Steel Chess Tournament 2023 is the 85th edition and was the annual chess tournament held in Wijk aan Zee from 13 January to 29 January 2023.
  • The field of 14 players in the Masters section included the numbers one and two of the FIDE World ranking, Magnus Carlsen and Ding Liren, as well as five teenage grandmasters.

Usman Khawaja wins inaugural Shane Warne Men’s Test Player of the Year award

Australia’s opening batter Usman Khawaja won the inaugural Shane Warne Award as the men’s Test player of the year. Shane Warne Men’s Test Player of the Year award is named in honour of the legendary leg-spinner Shane Warne, who passed away last March, Khawaja polled 22 votes to win ahead of Marnus Labuschagne (20) and Steve Smith (16).

  • Khawaja was Australia’s top run-scorer in the five-day format since rejoining the Test team in January 2022, with 1020 runs at 78.46 during the voting period.
  • Veteran opener David Warner was named Men’s ODI Player of the Year.
  • All-rounder Marcus Stoinis claimed Australia’s T20 player of the year award
