Maharashtra top performer on finances, social indicators

India’s richest province of Maharashtra becomes the nation’s best performer, as per the state rankings released by a domestic credit rating company, the state rankings highlight its robust position on finances and social indicators. CareEdge — the research arm of Care Ratings Ltd released the rankings and Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s home state of Gujarat showed its robust economic growth and fiscal management.

  • India’s most industrialized state Tamil Nadu ranked third with an edge in social and governance categories.
  • The rankings evaluate performances on seven parameters — economic, fiscal, social, infrastructure, financial inclusion, environment and governance.

Indian Railways to launch Ayodhya to Janakpur ‘Bharat Gaurav Deluxe AC Tourist Train’

Indian Railways will run its Bharat Gaurav Deluxe AC Tourist Train on a very special tour “Shri Ram-Janaki Yatra: Ayodhya to Janakpur”, aimed at covering the two most significant pilgrimage sites Ayodhya and Janakpur from the neighbouring countries India and Nepal.

  • The tourist train will begin from Delhi on 17th February 2023
  • It will aim to boost bilateral relations and also promote cultural relations between the two countries.
  • The train will be operated by Railways’ PSU- IRCTC.
  • State of Art Bharat Gaurav Deluxe AC Tourist Train with 1st AC & 2nd AC Class Visit pilgrimage and heritage sites at Ayodhya and Janakpur Dham (Nepal) along with Nandigram, Sitamarhi, Varanasi and Prayag.
  • Tourist Train consists of 4 first AC coaches, 2 second AC Coaches, one well-equipped pantry car and two rail restaurants.
  • It can accommodate 156 tourists onboard.
  • The Bharat Gaurav Tourist Train launch was started under the Government of India initiative “Dekho Apna Desh” to promote domestic tourism.
  • At a price range starting from Rs. 39,775/- per person, the train will be a 7-day all-inclusive tour package and the price will cover the train journey in respective class, Night stays at AC hotels, All meals (VEG ONLY), all transfer & sight-seeing in buses, Travel Insurance and services of guide etc.

New York Times List Of Places To Visit In 2023

The New York Times has recommended 52 places that one can visit for their travel plans for 2023. In India, Kerala, ‘God’s own country’, has been featured on the list. Kerala is listed as “a southern Indian state celebrated for its beaches, backwater lagoons, cuisine and rich cultural traditions like the Vaikathashtami festival”.

  • New York Times list of places in 2023 also includes London, Japan’s Morioka, Kilmartin Glen in Scotland, Auckland in New Zealand, Palm Springs in California, the Kangaroo Island of Australia, Vjosa River in Albania, and Tromso in Norway.
  • In 2022, TIME magazine named Kerala in its list of “50 extraordinary destinations to explore” as “ecotourism hotspot” and “one of India’s most beautiful states.
  • the report mentioned the ayurvedic treatments, yoga, and traditional delicious meals offered in the state.

PM Modi inaugurates Tent City in Varanasi

On 13th January 2023, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated Tent City and laid the foundation stones of several waterways project worth more than Rs 1,000 crores in Varanasi. the projects aim to boost trade, tourism, and employment opportunities in eastern India.

  • Varanasi Development Authority in public-private partnership mode on the banks of the Ganga developed the Tent City.
  • It aims to raise tourism opportunities in the region.
  • The Tent City includes accommodation facilities for tourists along with live classical music and yoga sessions.

Tamil Nadu International Balloon Festival 2023

8th Edition of the Tamil Nadu International Balloon festival (TNIBF) was started on 13th January 2023 at Pollachi, Coimbatore District with the support of the Department of Tourism Tamil Nadu. Tamil Nadu International Balloon festival will be held till 15th January 2023. it will contain all different types of Hot Air balloons from 8+ Countries, all beautiful and unique Shapes and colours.

  • The festival aims to attract people, especially from other countries, to various tourist destinations in the State.

Tamil Nadu’s First Transgender Village Assistant

A transgender Sruthi has been appointed as a village assistant in Melkaranthai village in Ettayapuram circle of Thoothukudi district for the first time in Tamil Nadu. the appointment order was issued by District Collector Senthilraj. Sruthi will protect the government properties, government trees, government alienated lands, and government buildings in his village and monitor the law and order situation and the spread of infectious diseases and report to the higher-level officers from time to time.

Tamil Nadu Assembly amends Act to make Tamil compulsory for govt Jobs

On 13th January 2023, The Tamil Nadu Assembly passed amended legislation to make securing a pass in Tamil language paper compulsory for recruitment to State government services. The Tamil Nadu Government Servants (Conditions of Service) Act, 2016 Bill will be amended through the Statement of Objects and Reasons of the Bill.

  • As per the bill, no person shall be eligible for appointment to any service by direct recruitment unless he/she has adequate knowledge of the official language of the State.

The Bill inserted a new Section (21-A) after Section 21

  • Notwithstanding anything contained in Section 21, on and from the 1st day of December 2021, any person who applies for recruitment to any post in any service by direct recruitment shall pass the Tamil language paper in the examination conducted for the recruitment with not less than forty per cent marks.

India’s First Centre of Excellence in Online Gaming in Shillong

Digital India Startup Hub will establish India’s first Centre of Excellence in Online Gaming at Shillong by March 2023 through the Software Technology Parks of India. The Centre of Excellence in Shillong will catalyse startups and entrepreneurs from the entire North East Region to make the Next Gen Online Gaming ecosystem.

PM Modi to flag off 8th Vande Bharat Express train

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will flag off the 8th Vande Bharat Express train connecting Secunderabad with Visakhapatnam on 15th January 2023 via video conferencing. The eighth Vande Bharat Express train will be the first train that will connect the Telugu-speaking states of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, covering a distance of around 700 km.

  • The train will stop at Visakhapatnam, Rajahmundry and Vijayawada stations in Andhra Pradesh and at Khammam, Warangal and Secunderabad stations in Telangana.

Gujarat CM Bhupendra Patel inaugurates wildlife rehabilitation centre

On 13th January 2023, Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel inaugurated an online wildlife rehabilitation Centre at Daskroi’s Bilasia village in Ahmedabad, as part of the state’s Karuna Abhiyan (campaign for compassion), launched during Uttarayan to save birds injured by sharp kite strings.

  • The rehabilitation Centre is spread over an area of 23,000 square meters and has been prepared at an estimated cost of Rs 2.72 crore.
  • It will offer all kinds of facilities for the treatment of injured animals as well as their rehabilitation.

Karuna Abhiyan 

  • The statewide Karuna Abhiyan will be held from January 10 to 20, aimed at including dialogue among various cooperative organizations and state government departments of forest and animal husbandry.
  • The forest and animal husbandry departments and the municipal cooperation administration have supported Karuna Abhiyan in rescuing and treating injured birds during the kite flying festival in the state.

India’s retail inflation eases to 5.72% in December 2022

India’s retail inflation dropped marginally to 5.72% in December from 5.88% in November as per the government data and is the lowest that the price rise indicator in a year. The retail inflation stays under the Reserve Bank of India’s upper tolerance level for the 2nd consecutive month now.

  • Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation released the data and showed that food inflation eased to 4.05% in December from 4.67% in November.

Santhi Kumari Appointed as First Woman Chief Secretary of Telangana

Senior IAS Officer A Santhi Kumari is elected as the new Chief Secretary of Telangana and assumed the charge as the first women Chief Secretary of the State at the Secretariat in BRK Bhavan. Santhi Kumari will replace incumbent Somesh Kumar, who was relieved from the Telangana government by the Union Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT). Somesh Kumar was appointed as the Chief Secretary on 31st December 2019.

  • Santhi Kumari is a 1989 batch officer and hails from Andhra Pradesh.
  • She becomes the first woman to be Chief Secretary of Telangana.
  • She holds a post-graduation degree in Marine Biology and has pursued an MBA in the US.

  • She also served the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) for two years overseeing financial inclusion.

Cognizant Appoints Ravi Kumar S as Chief Executive Officer

IT giant Cognizant has appointed Ravi Kumar as its new Chief Executive Officer, he will replace the outgoing Brian Humphries, effective immediately. Mr Kumar served as the president and COO of Infosys until October 2022, before leaving the company to join Cognizant the following week as President of Cognizant Americas.

  • Ravi Kumar S worked in Infosys for over 20 years and served as the company’s president for the last six years.
  • He worked on the boards of TransUnion and software services provider Digimarc Corp.
  • He holds a bachelor’s degree in engineering from Shivaji University and his M.B.A. from Xavier Institute of Management, India.

Indian-American Usha Reddi takes oath as Kansas state Senator in US

Indian-American city commissioner Usha Reddi took oath as a senator in the US state of Kansas, she replaced current Manhattan Senator Tom Hawk. Usha Reddi served on the Manhattan City Commission since 2013 and was designated by Democratic precinct leaders in Riley, Geary and Clay counties.

  • She was first appointed to the Manhattan City Commission for a four-year term in April 2013 and re-elected in 2017 and 2021.
  • She also served as Mayor in 2016-2017 and in 2020.
  • He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Developmental Psychology from Ohio State University, a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education and a Master of Science in Educational Leadership from Kansas State University.
  • In 2020, He was honoured with the Elected Women of Excellence Award from the National Foundation of Women Legislators

Indian peacekeepers honoured with UNMISS honoured with UN medal for exemplary service

Over 1,000 Indian peacekeepers serving with the UN Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) were honoured with the prestigious UN medals at an award ceremony, which was held in Upper Nile. UNMISS Force Commanders Lieutenant General Mohan Subramanian delivered the medals to the 1,171 troops, five women, and peacekeepers.
