Every year, Autism Sunday is observed on the second Sunday in February. In 2024, the day will be held on February 11 and is also called the International Day of Prayer for Autism Spectrum Disorders. The day aims to create awareness of autism, a neurodevelopmental disorder that affects how people interact socially, and with their surroundings.
History
In 2002, Autism Sunday first took place during Autism Awareness Year in the United Kingdom. It was started by parents and carers Ivan Corea and Charika Corea, founders of the Autism Awareness Campaign UK. Parents of Charin, a teenager with autism spectrum disorder and a communication disorder urged leaders of religious organizations, churches, community groups, and world leaders around the world to speak up for people with autism spectrum disorders.
