Every year, African National Congress Foundation Day is observed on January 8. On this day, the Africans fought for their rights with spears in their hand against British and Boer colonisers. The ANC believes the day is a struggle for freedom and justice. The African National Congress has consistently been in power since April 1994.

In 1994, the ANC gained democracy with the allotment of a firm mandate to frame the new democratic constitution for South Africa. In 1996, the new constitution came into effect.
