Congress president Somendranath Mitra dies
- The Congress Committee president of West Bengal, Shri Somendranath Mitra has taken his last breath at the age of 78. he died at a city hospital on 30th July 2020. he was suffering from kidney-related ailments.
- In the year 2018, Mitra assumed the charge of West Bengal Congress. he has played an important role in building an electoral understanding of Left parties and Congress in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls. he served as Bengal Congress chief for three times.
- in 1972, he started serving as MLA from Sealdah Assembly seat and later represented the constituency for seven times. in the year 2008, Mitra decided to leave Congress party and joined Trinamool Congress in the next year. along with it, he has also represented as a Trinamool Congress MPDiamond Harbour Lok Sabha seat between 2009 and 2014.
