PM Modi inaugurates second campus of CNCI in Kolkata

PM Narendra Modi has inaugurated the second campus of Chittaranjan National Cancer Institute (CNCI) in Kolkata on 7th January 2022. on this occasion, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee was also present.

  • It is located in Newtown, near Rajarhat Kolkata.

Chittaranjan National Cancer Institute:

  • In the West Bengal state, Chittaranjan National Cancer Institute (CNCI) is the only government-run cancer hospital.
  • It has been named after Deshbandhu Chittaranjan Das and was established in 1950.
  • CNCI is a premiere centre for cancer treatment and research in the eastern region of India.
  • A total of over 530 crores have been spent on this campus and Rs 400 crore provided by the Centre and rest by the West Bengal government.

EC raises expenditure limit for candidates in Parliamentary and Assembly polls

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has decided to increase the expenditure limits for candidates, contesting in Lok Sabha and Legislative assembly polls due to the rise in the cost inflation index and the size of the electorate.

  • The election commission increased the poll expenditure limit up to ₹95 lakh for the Lok Sabha elections from ₹70 lakh.
  • For the state assembly elections, the expenditure limit has been hiked from ₹28 lakh to ₹40 lakh.
  • ECI will conduct the assembly elections in five states including Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Uttarakhand, Goa, and Manipur this year.

National Water Awards 2020: Uttar Pradesh Bags 1st Prize

On 7th January 2022, Union Minister of Jal Shakti Gajendra Singh Shekhawat has announced the 3rd National Water Awards-2020.

  • Uttar Pradesh has been honoured with the first prize in the Best State category and followed by Rajasthan and Tamil Nadu got the 2nd and 3rd prize.
  • National Water Award aims to encourage the stakeholders to adopt a holistic approach towards water resources management.
  • It creates awareness among the Indian citizens concerning the importance of water and also motivates them to adopt the best water usage practices.

Senior Chinese diplomat Zhang Ming takes charge of Secretary-General of SCO

China’s senior diplomat Zhang Ming has assumed the charge as the new Secretary-General of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO).

  • Zhang Ming has replaced Vladimir Norov, former Foreign Minister of Uzbekistan who has completed his term.
  • Zhang Ming’s appointment will come into effect from 1st January 2022 and will serve a three-year period.

About Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO)

  • The headquarters of the SCO is located in Beijing, China.
  • The SCO comprises eight member states: India, Kazakhstan, China, the Kyrgyz Republic, Pakistan, Russia, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.
  • India and Pakistan joined SCO at the Astana summit in 2017.

UN World Food Programme partners with The Akshaya Patra Foundation for PM-POSHAN Scheme

The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) in India has partnered with The Akshaya Patra Foundation in order to boost the effectiveness of the Pradhan Mantri Poshan Shakti Nirman (PM-POSHAN) scheme. Pradhan Mantri Poshan Shakti Nirman (PM-POSHAN) scheme is called Mid-Day Meal Scheme in the country.

  • During the signing, WFP India country director Bishow Parajuli and Vice Chairman of the Bengaluru-based NGO Shri Chanchalapthi Dasa were present.
  • The Scheme ensures food security for school children.
  • It aims to complement WFP’s global network of running large-scale feeding programmes.

Puducherry will host 25th National Youth Festival in 2022

The 25th National Youth Festival will be conducted in Puducherry from 12th January 2022 to 16th January 2022. Anurag Thakur and Lt. Governor of Puducherry Dr Tamilisai Soundararajan have unveiled the Logo and Mascot of the 25th National Youth Festival.

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi has selected Puducherry as a venue for the National Youth Festival 2022.
  • Anurag Thakur has also launched a tagline of the National Youth Festival i.e. Shaksham Yuva Shashakth Yuva meaning Capable Youth- Forceful Youth, Able Youth- Strong Youth.
  • Around 1000 youths will participate in the festival from the all parts of the country.

Ind-Ra cuts India’s GDP growth forecast by 10 basis points to 9.3% in FY22

The rating agency India Ratings and Research (Ind-Ra) has cut the GDP of India for the current fiscal FY 2021-2022 due to the rapid spread of the Omicron variant.

  • Ind-Ra has estimated GDP to be 9.3% y-o-y in FY22. prior to this, the Ind-Ra expected the GDP will be 9.4%.
