The Center makes a Commission of Inquiry to probe the “incidents of violence” in Manipur

The Centre established a three-member Commission of Inquiry, headed by the former chief justice of the Gauhati High Court Ajai Lamba, to probe the violence in Manipur that erupted following a protest rally by the All Tribal Students’ Union, Manipur (ATSUM) on May 3 against the demand for inclusion of the Meiteis in the Scheduled Tribe (ST) category.

  • The commission will conduct inquiries into the “causes and spread of the violence and riots targeting members of different communities which took place in Manipur on May 3 and thereafter”.
  • The three-member commission is former chief justice of the Gauhati High Court Ajai Lamba, retired IAS officer Himanshu Shekhar Das and retired IPS officer Aloka Prabhakar.

Nitin Gadkari launched 4 projects worth Rs 1450 crore in Assam

Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari inaugurated the 4-Lane Section between Nagaon Bypass-Teliagaon and Teliagaon-Rangagara and He also laid the foundation for Mangaldai Bypass and the 4-lane section between Daboka-Parakhuwa in Assam.

  • The 18 Km long 4-Lane section between Nagaon Bypass-Teliagaon and Teliagaon-Rangagara will cost Rs 403 Crore aimed at boosting accessibility between North Assam and Upper Assam, fueling economic growth and opening new opportunities.
  • The foundation for the construction of a 15 Km bypass in Mangaldai on NH 15 will have a total cost of 535 Crores.
  • It will help in strengthening the link between Assam, West Bengal, and Arunachal Pradesh, fostering seamless travel and regional integration.

Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan launches Kerala Fibre Optic Network project

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan launched the KFON, Kerala Fibre Optic Network project at Shankaranarayanan Thambi Hall of the State Legislative Assembly. The Kerala Fibre Optic Network project aims to ensure internet facilities for all at affordable rates in the State.

  • It also aims to provide free internet to over 20,00,000 poor families.
  • It will bridge the digital divide in society by providing internet facilities at a lower rate.
  • In the first phase of the KFON initiative, Internet facilities will be delivered to 30,000 government institutions and fourteen thousand houses in the State.

In the NIRF Law College Rankings 2023, NLSIU Bangalore has topped as the best law college in India for the seventh consecutive year. The NIRF Rankings included the ‘Law’ category to ranl the best law colleges in the country.

  • In 2023, the NIRF released the ranking of educational institutions in India, the NIRF Rankings 2023 across 11 different categories including Overall, University, College, Research, Medical, Dental, Management, Pharmacy, Law, Engineering, and Architecture.

India ranks 4th in the list of most polluted countries

As per Oxford University’s June 2023 data, Nepal has topped the list of most polluted countries in the world. India was ranked 4th in the list of “Worst Polluted Countries” in the world. The report mentions that South Asia residents breathe in an average of “99.73 micrograms per cubic meter” of particulate matter per day.

India’s leading sprinter won two gold medals in the Flanders Cup 2023 athletics event

India’s leading sprinter “Amlan Borgohain” won one gold medal each in men’s 100m and 200m races at the “Flanders Cup 2023” athletics event globally known as the “International Antwerp Athletics Gala,” held at Merkshem, Belgium in June 2023.

  • Amlan Borgohain passed the line in 10.70 seconds, being the fastest player of the event.
  • He made a national record of 10.25 seconds in the 100m and 20.96 seconds in the 200m, forming a record over the line ahead of Hofman’s 21.42.

Three medals for India at the “U-20 Asian Athletics Championships 2023

India began their 2023 Asian Under 20 Athletics Championships campaign by achieving three medals, including two gold, on the opening day in Yecheon, South Korea. Rezoana Mallick Heena and Bharatpreet Singh won gold medals in women’s 400-meter race and men’s discus throw respectively.

  • Antima Pal received India’s 3rd medal of the day, a bronze, in the women’s 5,000-meter race with a time of 17 minutes and 17.11 seconds.

Indian Wrestler “Manisha” won Gold in UWW Ranking Series 2023

Indian grapplers won three medals in the UWW Ranking Series event in Bishkek. Manisha won the Gold in the 65 kg weight category, while India’s tally in the series is four medals including 1 gold, 1 silver, and 2 bronze.
