Ranil Wickremesinghe resigned as Sri Lankan prime minister and has cleared the way to make an all-party government take over the country. 16 MPs of President Rajapaksa’s Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) party requested him to resign immediately in a letter.
- The country is facing the worst economic crisis since it gained independence in 1948 and citizens have been protesting against President Rajapaksa and his government, asking him to resign from the post.
Sri Lankan prime minister Ranil Wickremesinghe Tweet:
- To ensure the continuation of the Government including the safety of all citizens I accept the best recommendation of the Party Leaders today, to make way for an All-Party Government. To facilitate this I will resign as Prime Minister.
