Rocket scientist S Somnath to be new Isro chief, replacing K Sivan – Senior rocket scientist S. Somanath is appointed as the new Chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and Secretary of, Department of Space. Rocket scientist S Somanath will take place of K. Sivan as ISRO Chief.
- K Sivan was appointed as the Isro chief in January 2018 and he was given a one-year extension till January 14, 2022.
- Somanath will serve as new ISRO Chief for a combined tenure of three years from the date of joining of the post.
- S Somnath will be the 10th chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation.
- Prior to this, he was serving as the director of Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre.

- S Somnath is a rocket scientist and is serving as the director of Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre.
- Somanath assumed the charge as the VSSC’s head on January 22, 2018.
- He has also served as the Associate Director (Projects) of Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre and also as the Project Director of GSLV Mk-III launch vehicle.
- On December 18, 2014, the first experimental flight of the LVM3-X/CARE mission was successfully completed under S Somnath’s leadership.
Education of Rocket scientist S Somanath
- Gold medalist S Somnath studied B Tech in Mechanical Engineering from TKM college of engineering, Kollam, and Masters in Aerospace Engineering from Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore.
- In 1985, Somanath became the part of VSSC and served as a team leader for the integration of PSLV during the early phases.
