Press Freedom Day 2023 – Press /Media means Journalism without Fear or Favour. In order to pay honour the freedom of the press, On 3rd May, people celebrate World Press Freedom Day every year in the world. it also aims to celebrate freedom of speech. Along with it, it helps in providing enlightenment to the society that freedom of speech is a vital point in human rights.

Importance of World Press Freedom Day 2023-

  • The role of Media and Press are very important in a country or world. The Media covers all kinds of information from different corners of the world in front of the public.
  • Media and Press person put their lives at risk and sometimes, they have to face tough situations in order to bring the news.
  • As a result, it becomes the responsibility of the general public to respect these important elements (Media and Press) of society.

Background of World Press Freedom Day –

  • In order to promote the independence of the Africa Press, the United Nations created World Freedom Day in 1993. the Declaration to make free press happened on 3rd May. that’s why the 3rd of May is observed as a special day across the world.
  • The declaration defines that what is the significance of a free press and describes how Media or Press play their role in the economic development of a country.
  • in addition, UNESCO distributed the Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize in 1997. The prize was named after Columbian journalist Guillermo Cano. during his research about drug barons, he was killed in 1986.

Press Freedom Day 2023 Theme –

  • The theme of World Press Day 2023 is “Shaping a future of rights: freedom of expression as the engine of other human rights.” 

The themes for the 2020 year are:

  • Gender Equality in All Aspect of the Media.
  • Independent and Professional Journalism free from Political and Commercial Influence.
  • Safety of Women and Men Journalists and Media Workers.
