Every year, Orthodox Lent is observed from Clean Monday to the evening of Holy Saturday. It runs to Easter Sunday, from March 18 to May 4 this year. The day is called Orthodox Lent or Great Lent — celebrated by followers of the Christian faith. The day is a six-week celebration for believers to prepare for Easter through abstinence, prayer, and fasting.

History of Orthodox Lent

The 40 days of Lent highlights the period between Jesus Christ’s death and resurrection. Jesus gave his 40 days for fasting and praying in the desert. Various Christian communities held a 40-day fast before the three holiest days of the year: Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and Easter Sunday.
