The name Colby holds a log history that goes back to Old Norse. ‘Kol’ means coal or charcoal, and ‘byr’ refers to settlement. both words are combined, the word represents a village or farmstead associated with “Koli” — a man with a dark-complexioned face. The name Koli contains Viking roots, which probably describes the emphasis on a man’s rugged face, weather-beaten from the elements.
